The Piglet Saved from the BBQ

Chester's rescue story is the stuff of sanctuary legend — and it's all thanks to our superstar volunteer Liz, who has a gift for being in the right place at the right time.

Chester was advertised on a local Facebook community page. A man had rescued him from his neighbours who were planning to put Chester on the BBQ. But now the man was moving house and couldn't take Chester with him. He mentioned that Chester was best mates with his dog — a friendship that was about to be torn apart.

A friend of Liz had spotted this knew exactly what to do. They reached out, coordinated the rescue, and with Liz's help they brought Chester to Gaia's Serenity, where he'd never have to worry about becoming someone's dinner ever again.

When Chester was brought to Gaia's Serenity, it was soon discovered he was much too small for a six month old pig. He was the size of a three month old piglet due to being fed cracked corn to "keep him small", putting him at risk of medical issues.

Now Chester is settling into sanctuary life, discovering what it means to be safe, valued, and free. He is loving eating a range of healthy food and can now grow into a healthy pig. His story is a reminder that every life is worth saving — and that teamwork between multiple compassionate people can make rescue possible.
